Proposed
job cuts at P&O Ferries will be "a disaster for Dover and the shipping
industry", according to the RMT union.
The
union reacted angrily to an announcement the firm intends to axe more than 600
jobs on its Dover-Calais ferry route, claiming that the company tried to bury
the news during the state visit of the US president.
RMT
general secretary Bob Crow said it was ‘outrageous’ the union had found out
about the redundancies via the media.

"We
will also be seeking an urgent meeting with the shipping minister," he
said. "The RMT will move heaven and earth to defend these jobs and the
industry."
