Ruth Spellman is to step down as chief executive of Investors in People (IIP) and join the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) as chief executive.
Spellman joined IIP as CEO in 1998 – two years after the body’s creation.
Spellman told Personnel Today she was leaving IIP “purely for personal progression, having spent the past eight years leading the development of the Standard”.
“I will be leading the IMechE through a period of change and growth, helping to address the shortfall of engineering and high-grade technical skills in the UK economy,” she said.
Phillip Williamson, chairman of IIP, said Spellman had played a significant role in the growth and development of IIP.

“Thanks to her vision and her leadership, Investors in People is currently in an excellent position to play a significant role in the implementation of the Leitch review, and we will continue to champion business improvement through people, changing attitudes to training and development positively and permanently.”
The IIP standard is now used by more than 60,000 organisations across the public and private sector (employing one-third of the UK workforce), and has been exported successfully to 27 countries across the globe.
