If someone is looking for generalist experience (Personnel Today, 27 March), I would suggest some voluntary work with small businesses in your local area. You could help them out with simple things such as writing statements of terms and conditions and putting basic discipline and grievance procedures in place so they can handle them within the guidelines of the dispute resolution regulations.
Offering to chat through issues and providing general advice in your spare time will get you the necessary experience to be able to move on with your career, and will help to keep local businesses out of the employment tribunal system.
