Asda staff will receive a record £22m bonus this year after the supermarket giant reported the best Christmas sales ever.
Personneltoday.com revealed last Friday that all 133,000 Asda employees would share the highest bonus ever paid after the retailer defied the economic downturn. Results showed that 231 stores reported sales exceeding £2m in the eight days running up to Christmas, compared to 206 stores the previous year.
A total of 130 stores and 16 depots hit the top target or ‘super bonus threshold’, earning these employees an extra £420 today. The average full-time employee payment across the country was £269 for full-time staff, and £177 for those working part-time.
Caroline Massingham, people director at the retailer, said: “This record £22m payout is only possible thanks to the continued hard work and dedication of all of our store and depot colleagues.
“Their bonuses are hard-earned and well deserved, and will provide a helping hand for colleagues in difficult times.”

The annual performance-related bonus scheme was first introduced in 1999 after Asda was acquired by American giant Wal-Mart. The total amount paid in bonuses to colleagues across the chain has now reached more than £129m.
Only employees with at least six months’ service qualify for the bonus.
