The Rant on professional development in HR (Personnel Today, 18 April) was spot on. I was able to take my Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development qualification within the NHS, but when I tried to get a job outside, I was told that I didn’t have enough experience in high-level work such as disciplinaries, etc.
These ‘holes’ in my knowledge came about because we were allowed to liaise with the managers about usual every day matters, but as soon as something ‘juicy’ came up it was immediately taken out of our hands. How are we supposed to develop?
