People focus is the secret of Slimming World’s success

by Personnel Today 18 Jun 2009
by Personnel Today 18 Jun 2009

Slimming World, the UK’s leading weight loss organisation, is celebrating another success after being awarded Investors in People (IiP) status for the 5th consecutive time.

The Derbyshire company, which this year celebrates its 40th anniversary, has enjoyed an excellent year, recording a five percent rise in the number of groups and a five percent growth in membership attendance – despite the recession.

As national obesity rates soar, Slimming World’s weight loss expertise is becoming increasingly well recognised. The company is dedicated to helping overweight people across the UK and Ireland to make healthy lifestyle changes and transform their lives.

The IiP award further establishes Slimming World’s position as one of the best UK businesses to work for, recognising its excellent leadership, outstanding support of staff and dedication to employee development.

During the review process, IiP assessors spoke to over 50 members of staff and were impressed by positive statements such as ‘we’re here to change people’s lives’ and ‘members come first’.

Tracey Pepper, IIP Assessor, said: “It was exhilarating to hear people talk about the company they work for and the people they work with in such positive language.

Slimming World lives out the principles of Investors in People and applies values that are caring and performance focused. Everyone I spoke to confirmed the genuine commitment of the company to supporting them.

They described the positives of working in a flexible company, with people management that couldn’t be improved, easy access to opportunities to learn and a culture where people at all levels are able to give and receive constructive feedback.

The excellent food, great working environment and on-site gym and salon were also praised. One person summarised the feelings of many when they said ‘I couldn’t think of a better company to work for.’”

Slimming World MD, Caryl Richards, was delighted by the award, saying:

“We’re very proud to have achieved Investors in People accreditation again – and in our 40th anniversary year. As a company Slimming World prides itself on providing our staff and members with a warm, friendly and supportive environment where they can flourish.

“Our growing success as a business, at a time when other companies are struggling, isn’t an accident. It’s a result of our passion for developing our staff and in turn delivering exceptional service to people who seek our support to help them mange their weight and change their lives.

“We invest a huge amount of time and resource into ensuring that members of staff have all the training and support they need to achieve their potential and to help our members achieve their dreams. The ethos of the company is founded on helping people believe in themselves and empowering them to achieve success.

“Hearing all the amazing things members of staff here say about what it means to work for Slimming World really brings home what a unique and special company this is. We look forward to continuing to build a strong organisation that provides excellent training to staff and extraordinary service to our members.”
