Payroll should be at the heart of the HR function

How refreshing to hear that Sally Jacobson puts paying employees on time at the heart of her HR strategy (Personnel Today, 21 March). Too often, there appears to be no focus on the importance of the payroll function.

The payroll department is the organisation’s shop window, so failing to recognise the importance of accuracy and timeliness will cost HR dear. But to see the department as merely a processing function is to miss the point.

Payroll professionals control a business’s biggest controllable cost – the salary bill – and protect the company’s reputation by ensuring compliance with a vast range of legislation.
