The traditional gift, such as a carriage clock or gold watch, to reward years of dedicated service by an employee, now seems to be a thing of the past.
A survey by Personnel Today‘s sister publication IRS Employment Review shows that many organisations now favour cash awards, gift vouchers or extra annual leave to reward their long-serving employees.
However, while some organisations genuinely recognise experienced, skilled and loyal employees, other awards leave a lot to be desired.

Some of the typical gifts revealed by the survey included:
- BSH Home Appliances – one month’s salary tax-free and five days’ extra holiday after 25 years.
- Broomfield & Alexander – a bottle of wine after 15 years.
