Recession hit CIPD makes redundancies

Breaking news... the CIPD is making 41 staff redundant as the recession catches up with the HR sector's membership body.

Sources told Personnel Today that staff at the institute had been informed this morning (2 April) of the proposed redundancies.

A spokeman told me the CIPD was not immune to the impact of the recession, revenues from member subs are down because fees have been frozen this year and 'operational efficiencies' have to be made.

Strange when you consider the CIPD boosted its income by more than 10% to reach £39.4m in 2007-08 (its most recent annual report).

What with the G20 taking place, it's perhaps a good day to bury bad news as far as the CIPD is concerned.

Tiny alarm bells started to ring for me when I saw the CIPD's latest membership offer; £20 M&S voucher for members who introduce a new member, plus 15 months membership for the price of 12.

In the wider context, cutting about 12% of your workforce is by no means a bad thing as it makes an organisation leaner and fitter for the future, but HR professionals might be a little concerned about the latest developments in SW19.

Mike - you say: "cutting about 12% of your workforce is by no means a bad thing as it makes an organisation leaner and fitter"... surely that should be IF it makes an organisation fitter. Leaner and fitter are not necessarily synchronous - organisations must beware not to develop a functional 'anorexia', where they become so lean they cannot operate properly.
